The ideas for my pieces begin with a glimpse like a shadow you see out of the corner of your eye. As I work the shadow begins to form into an idea. They are situations Ive imagined or are haunted by. I call on my own personal ghosts, universal worries, hopes, fears and imaginings. I use cartoons, animation stills, dreams, medieval manuscripts and other references to weave my stories. I spend a lot of time wandering my mind and my farm and usually discover something unexpected that works its way into my work.
The sculpture and relief drawings on plywood are made from wood planks (primarily basswood and poplar) and various other materials. I use a bandsaw to cut out the shapes, a large disk/ belt sander to do the initial shaping and hand and rotary tools to carve and detail. I sand them to an almost porcelain finish then I paint them with water based paints, pencil drawing and seal them with a matte varnish.
My drawings and paintings are acrylic paints and inks with colored pencil and sometimes archival ink markers or pen and ink. I work mostly on wood or stone paper. I use multi layers of paint that I scrape and texture the wood and stone papers allow me to do that without breaking down. The pieces are sealed with a matte varnish
